Air Conditioning – Can it be Environmentally Friendly?

First Class Plumbing and HVAC

Air conditioning means the cooling of indoor air for thermal comfort. It refers in a broader sense; any kind of cooling, heating, ventilation, or disinfection that modifies the health of air. Any appliance, system, or machine that’s designed to stabilize air temperature and humidity within an area (employed for cooling as well as heating with respect to the air properties at the given time), is referred to as an aura conditioner. Typically this uses a refrigeration cycle but sometimes evaporation, which is commonly for comfort cooling in buildings and autos.

Modern air conditioning emerged from advances in chemistry in the 19th century, and it was recorded that the first large-scale electrical air-con was invented and used in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier in Buffalo, The big apple. The first air conditioners and refrigerators employed toxic or flammable gases like ammonia, methyl chloride, and propane that could result in fatal accidents after they leaked.

Air conditioning is broadly divides to comfort and process applications. In Comfort Applications it aims to provide a building indoor environment that stays relatively constant in the range preferred by humans despite adjustments to external weather conditions or in internal heat loads, whereas in Process Applications it is aimed at providing a suitable environment for any process being performed, regardless of internal heat and humidity loads and external climate conditions. In addition to buildings, air-con can be used for many types of transportation – motor-cars as well as other land vehicles, trains, ships, aircraft, and spacecraft. Although often within the comfort range, it is the needs of the method that determine conditions, not human preference. In both comfort and process applications, the objective may be to not only control temperature, but also humidity, air quality and air movement from space to space.

Though designed for man’s comfort, ac can constitute polluting of the environment. Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that create harm or discomfort to humans or any other living organisms, or damages all-natural environment into the atmosphere. Since the atmosphere is a complex dynamic natural gaseous system that’s essential to support life in the world, its pollution will drastically affect human health along with the Earth’s ecosystems.

Since chronic, low-level experience various chemicals, e.g., lead exposure – even at relatively lower levels – may result in numerous adverse outcomes, continuous contact with air conditioning appliances will surely have severe effects, including anaemia, malaise, and damage to the nerves. Children are particularly prone to the neurotoxic effects of lead. Relatively lower levels of exposure can help to eliminate their IQ scores, cause learning disabilities, poor school performance, and violent behaviour, which may contribute to reduced lifetime earnings.

Apart from the problem of stratospheric ozone depletion, indoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed since the world’s worst pollution problems in the 2008 Blacksmith Institute World’s Worst Polluted Places report. Though atmospheric pollution may be caused by other combustible materials including open burning of refuse, old tyres, old vehicles, exhaust pipes of engines as well as other locomotives which pollute the surroundings, yet pollution from ac units are very dangerous. Protection against atmospheric pollution is very important because a lot of diseases like respiratory system infections can occur at their store and the major constituent of these gases which is carbon-monoxide can steer clear of the free flow of blood in the body by impairing the oxygen carrying capacity with the hemoglobin. A poorly maintained air-conditioning system will often promote the growth and spread of microorganisms, the infectious agent to blame for Legionnaires’ disease, but as long because air conditioner is clean these health hazards may be avoided.

Conversely, air-con, including filtration, humidification, cooling, disinfection, etc., enable you to provide a clean, safe, hypoallergenic atmosphere in hospital operating rooms and also other environments where an appropriate atmosphere is critical to patient safety and well-being. Air cooling can have a positive influence on sufferers of allergies and asthma. In serious prolonged high temperatures, air conditioning can save the lives with the elderly. Some local authorities have even set up public cooling centers for folks without home air cooling.
